U.S. Inan, P.I., Stanford University Personnel on station: William Burgess, Stanford University. A new experiment to monitor the arrival bearing of subionospheric VLF communication signals in the presence of lightning-associated ionospheric disturbances commenced. Maintenance of existing radio receiving and recording equipment continued with much-appreciated assistance from support personnel, especially the science technician, the R/V POLAR DUKE electronics technician, and the assistant laboratory supervisor. VLF antennas were retensioned and realigned, and the antenna segment of the feedline (the third segment of three) was replaced. The signal calibration system was overhauled. The antenna for the GOES-synchronized clock was re-aimed to match the new location of GOES. Both PERTEC digital tape drives were thoroughly cleaned. Repairs to the mixer/monitor and the MF radios began. All other equipment appears to be functioning properly. Nondedicated spare IC's were inventoried, and all spare parts have been better organized for ease of identification and use in case repairs to Stanford equipment become necessary. On 28 May responsibility for the performance of normal recordings was turned over to the new science technician. S-254 CHLORINE - AND BROMINE - CONTAINING GASES IN THE ANTARCTIC. R.A.Rasmussen, P.I., Oregon state University. No personnel on station; the project is being monitored and maintained by the station physician. A total of 21 clean air samples have been archived for retrograde for S-254. There are currently 80 empty canisters on station. S-257 GEOPHYSICAL MONITORING FOR CLIMATE CONTROL (GMCC). J.T. Peterson and L.Waterman, P.I.'s, NOAA No personnel on station; the project is being monitored and maintained by the station physician. A total of 14 air samples have been archived for retrograde for S-257. There are currently 66 empty canisters on station. S-275 UM/DOE ATMOSPHERIC MONITORING PROGRAM AT PALMER STATION. T. Snowdon, University of Miami; C. Sanderson/N. Chui, EML/DOE N.Y. No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technicians Rod Corson and Jim Fraser. System continued to operate with normal weekly schedule of calibration, background, and sample counts, with one sample filter being exposed for the duration of the week. On Station there are currently five (5) exposed filters, one (1) filter being exposed, one (1) blank filter, one (1) prepared blank filter, and one (1) data disk currently being used to log data. T-312 TERASCAN SATELLITE IMAGING SYSTEM. R. Whritner, Scripps Institute. No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technicians Rod Corson and Jim Fraser The required satellite collection schedule continued with three (3) NOAA satellite passes. Two (2) DMSP f-10 satellite passes were also collected daily. Additional passes were collected to support the R/V NATHANIEL B. PALMER. These passes were recorded digitally on 8mm video tape. There are (12) full 8mm "video" tapes of collected passes on station and one current tape almost complete. T-313 UV MONITORING EXPERIMENT. C. Booth, Biospherical Instruments. No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technicians Rod Corson and Jim Fraser. Daily data packages were sent to Biospherical via E-Mail. This was the first of the Palmer monthly weather summaries to be sent to Biospherical on a regular basis. An absolute calibration scan was peformed on 26 May. Station science technician processed both NOAA and DMSP satellite images in support of the R/V NATHANIEL B. PALMER. Ice images were transmitted to the R/V NATHANIEL B. PALMER, when clear images were acquired. Jim Fraser arrived at Palmer Station on 24 May to replace Rod Corson with the turnover progressing smoothly. BURGESS/FREDERICK PLM001.JUN Action?
