L.B. Quetin and R.M. Ross, P.I.'s, University of California at Santa Barbara, CA No personnel on station. Phytoplankton cultures are being maintained by ASA Assistant Laboratory Supervisor, Maria Tarantino. Phytoplankton cultures were kept in an illuminated incubator. Biweekly checks of these cultures were done along with the transfer of phytoplankton. The krill tanks were drained and cleaned after the remaining krill died. The sterilizer was rinsed with fresh water. S-106 VLF REMOTE SENSING OF THUNDERSTORM AND RADIATION BELT COUPLING TO THE IONOSPHERE. U.S. Inan, P.I., Stanford University No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA Science Tech Jim Fraser. A power outage on 14 July took the GOES satellite clock off line for two days. During this time the system was off of the internal system clock. No data was missed due to this. On 27 July, tensioning errors began appearing during recording and rewind of digital tapes. Running the tapes off both of the tape drives and using different lots of tapes showed the problem to probably lie in the used tapes themselves. Data for 28 July was lost, and there are gaps in the data for several other days. Betamax recordings functioned normally. There are currently on station 96 written digital data tapes and 77 written Betamax data tapes. S-254 CHLORINE - AND BROMINE - CONTAINING GASES IN THE ANTARCTIC. R.A.Rasmussen, P.I., Oregon State University. No S-254 personnel are on station; the project is being monitored and maintained by the station physician. A total of 21 clean air samples have been archived for retrograde for S-254. There are currently 56 empty canisters on station. S-257 GEOPHYSICAL MONITORING FOR CLIMATE CONTROL (GMCC). J.T. Peterson and L.Waterman, P.I.'s, NOAA No S-257 personnel are on station; the project is being monitored and maintained by the station physician. A total of 20 air samples have been archived for retrograde for S-257. There are currently 44 empty canisters on station. S-275 UM/DOE ATMOSPHERIC MONITORING PROGRAM AT PALMER STATION. T. Snowdon of University of Miami, and C. Sanderson/N. Chui, EML/DOE N.Y., P.I.'s No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technician Jim Fraser. The system continued to operate with normal weekly schedule of calibration, background, and sample counts, with one sample filter being exposed for the duration of the week. The filter pump was off line during the power outage of 14 July. A resupply shipment of 60 filters was received from the R/V NATHANIEL B. PALMER on 27 July. On Station there are currently nine (9) exposed filters, one (1) filter being exposed, two (2) exposed blank filter, one (1) prepared blank filter, and one (1) data disk currently being used to log data. T-312 TERASCAN SATELLITE IMAGING SYSTEM. R. Whritner, P.I., Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technician Jim Fraser The required satellite collection schedule continued with three (3) NOAA satellite passes. Two (2) DMSP F-10 satellite passes were also collected daily. Passes were recorded digitally on 8mm video tape. The power outage on 14 July took the system off line. When it was restarted, the driver for a hard disk was not installed and had to be installed manually, with the help of Hae-Yong Shin at Sea Space. The power outage also took the satellite clock out of alignment. The Satellite Predictor tracking program is being run off of the system clock until the satellite clock can be reset. Data for 14 though 17 July was lost during this down time. There are 15 full 8mm "video" tapes of collected passes on station and one current tape almost complete. T-313 UV MONITORING EXPERIMENT. C. Booth, P.I., Biospherical Instruments. No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technician Jim Fraser. Daily data packages were sent to Biospherical via E-Mail. Log book entries were transmitted to Biospherical via E-Mail weekly. An absolute calibration scan was performed on 20 July. The power failure on 14 July resulted in one scan being delayed, but no data was lost. On 24 July, a problem in the Fluke multimeter shut down the system for most of the day. Only one scan was recorded that day. The Fluke was taken off line and replaced with the old Keithley meter. Normal operations with the Keithley proceeded on 25 July.
