L.B. Quetin and R.M. Ross, P.I.'s, University of California at Santa Barbara, California. No personnel on station. Phytoplankton cultures are being maintained by ASA Assistant Laboratory Supervisor, Maria Tarantino. Phytoplankton cultures were kept in an illuminated incubator. Biweekly checks of these cultures were done along with the transfer of phytoplankton. Debris off the bottom of the krill tanks was vacuumed out as needed. Assistant Laboratory Supervisor (ALS), Marine Projects Coordinator, and Marine Technician from the R/V POLAR DUKE collected phytoplankton samples by zodiac using a plankton tow net. The water samples were then filtered, oven dried, and packaged by the ALS for shipment to the principal investigators. S-106 VLF REMOTE SENSING OF THUNDERSTORM AND RADIATION BELT COUPLING TO THE IONOSPHERE. U.S. Inan, P.I., Stanford University Personnel on station: William Burgess, Stanford University, until 06 June. After 06 June system run by ASA Science Tech Jim Fraser. Grantee Bill Burgess finished site visit system maintenance and retrograded data tapes and test equipment to CONUS. One Betamax recorder was damaged during cleaning and was also retrograded. The experiment has since been running one Betamax recording, from 0700 to 1000 UT, and one digital recording, from 0130 to 1100 UT, daily. A special series of Betamax recordings were scheduled from 11 June to 25 June. These were started as soon as word was received on 13 June and discontinued 26 June. One of the special recordings was missed on 20 June when the Betamax timer was improperly reset. All other system functions were normal. There are currently on station 67 written digital data tapes and 46 written Betamax data tapes. S-254 CHLORINE - AND BROMINE - CONTAINING GASES IN THE ANTARCTIC. R.A.Rasmussen, P.I., Oregon state University. No personnel on station; the project is being monitored and maintained by the station physician. A total of 9 clean air samples have been archived for retrograde for S-254. There are currently 68 empty canisters on station. S-257 GEOPHYSICAL MONITORING FOR CLIMATE CONTROL (GMCC). J.T. Peterson and L.Waterman, P.I.'s, NOAA No personnel on station; the project is being monitored and maintained by the station physician. A total of 10 air samples have been archived for retrograde for S-257. There are currently 56 empty canisters on station. S-275 UM/DOE ATMOSPHERIC MONITORING PROGRAM AT PALMER STATION. T. Snowdon of University of Miami and C. Sanderson/N. Chui, EML/DOE N.Y., P.I.'s No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technician Jim Fraser. System continued to operate with normal weekly schedule of calibration, background, and sample counts, with one sample filter being exposed for the duration of the week. There was a three day delay in changing one sample filter resulting in shortened sampling times for the next week. An inventory of sample filters showed that there would not be enough to last until the next scheduled resupply in September. The PI indicated that in such a case, the last filter was to be left running until a new shipment was obtained. On Station there are currently four (4) exposed filters, one (1) filter being exposed, one (1) exposed blank filter, one (1) prepared blank filter, and one (1) data disk currently being used to log data. Retrograded to the PIs were five (5) exposed sample filters, one (1) exposed blank filter, and one (1) data disk. T-312 TERRASCAN SATELLITE IMAGING SYSTEM. R. Whritner, P.I., Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technician Jim Fraser The required satellite collection schedule continued with three (3) NOAA satellite passes. Two (2) DMSP f-10 satellite passes were also collected daily. Additional passes were collected to support the R/V NATHANIEL B. PALMER. This support was no longer required after 17 June. Passes were recorded digitally on 8mm video tape. There are eight (8) full 8mm "video" tapes of collected passes on station and one current tape almost complete. Thirteen (13) tapes were retrograded to the PI. T-313 UV MONITORING EXPERIMENT. C. Booth, P.I., Biospherical Instruments. No personnel on station; system is being run by ASA science technician Jim Fraser. Daily data packages were sent to Biospherical via E-Mail. Log book entries were transmitted to Biospherical via E-Mail weekly. An absolute calibration scan was performed on 22 June. Eight hours of data were lost on 07 and 08 June when the system clock was incorrectly reset on 07 June. This was corrected on 08 June. The latest version of the NEWSPTLK.EXE software was installed on 13 June and the system AUTOEXEC.BAT software updated. Copies of the system log book for Julian days 100 - 146 were retrograded to Biospherical. Former Science Tech Rod Corson completed the turnover to Jim Fraser and left the station on 06 June.
