Palmer LTER Annual Progress Report 7/94 to 7/95 1. SUMMARY OF PROGRESS TO DATE AND WORK TO BE PERFORMED DURING THE SUCCEEDING PERIOD Science news. The 1994-1995 season included: (1) Palmer area science activities from mid-October to early May including water column measurements to observe the seasonal timing in phytoplankton and zooplankton dynamics in the nearshore sampling grid, and reproductive ecology of penguin and skua colonies in the vicinity of Palmer Station, and (2) the annual cruise in January/February 1995. The annual cruise included: the large-scale sampling grid with transect lines at 100 km intervals from Palmer Station to south of Adelaide Island (Palmer LTER grid lines 600, 500, 400, 300 & 200), additional cardinal stations inside the islands along the Peninsula, and small scale foraging grids to characterize the hydrography, optics, chemistry and biology of the Adelie penguin foraging range during mid-to late January. This is a critical period in chick rearing when the demands on the foraging adults are at their peak before the chicks fledge. Based on results from the small-scale grid within 50 to 70 km of the rookeries that was run on the two previous January cruises, the approach to the predator/prey segment of the annual cruise was modified to include: 1. a "picket" line sampling strategy to identify the 30o sector which most of the penguins traveled (direction) once leaving the island, and the furthest distance at which penguins were seen in this sector (distance); 2. tracking of individual groups of penguins via zodiacs to verify the direction of travel; and 3. once a 'hot' spot was identified, a small scale high density (HD) grid of 10 km by 20 km with stations spaced at 2.5 km was run to characterize the biology and physics of the area. The modified strategy was successful. Enough penguins were seen at sea to support the conclusion that they were foraging within 30 to 50 km of their rookeries. Short term changes in both prey and predator distributions were observed, however. The same high density grid was occupied on three separate days about a week apart. Total acoustic biomass in the HD grid, which is primarily krill, increased throughout the three week period. In the middle of the period, however, the count of Adelie adults per kilometer was twice that during either the earlier or later sampling. This period coincided with a time when most adults abandoned the colonies to go to sea to feed, leaving only a small proportion to guard the chicks. This unusual response appeared to provide the chicks with enough food for successful fledging. Data issues. The web homepage established in February of 1994 is being augmented with links to related historical sites. Data online for Palmer LTER investigators is increasing as issues of documentation, quality assessment and publication are addressed. Karen Baker became a member of the DataTask executive committee of the data managers group. Weather. Weather information specifically has been made available online. Because of the importance to specific current site research questions, the importance in general for ecology at a long-term site and to cross site comparison activities, a number of issues pertaining to Palmer station weather and climate have been addressed over the last year. These efforts are ongoing. Historical weather records have been collected and analyzed (Smith, Stammerjohn and Baker, submitted). A second automatic weather station (AWS) has been installed 90 km off shore from the first AWS installed near Palmer station. This second AWS station gives Palmer LTER both an oceanic site and a coastal site. Both battery malfunctions as well as connector problems were identified and corrected due to a weekly monitoring program established to insure data quality. Palmer LTER interaction with agencies with an international directive. SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) Bill Fraser is a member of the sub-committee on Seabird Biology and advises advises SCAR on multiple issues related to basic and applied research on Southern Ocean seabirds. Wayne Trivelpiece is a member of CEMP. Data obtained with LTER support have been used by these committees to examine issues related to SO management and policy issues related, for example, to fisheries and other human impacts. AMLR (Antarctic Marine Living Resources Program) The U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources Program (AMLR) is a national program of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) providing information needed to formulate U.S. policy on the conservation and management of resources living in the oceans surrounding Antarctica. The program is in support of U.S. participation in the Commission and Scientific Committee of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which established the system for managing the living resources of the Antarctic ecosystem through international cooperation. U.S. participation via AMLR emphasizes directed research undertaken for the express purpose of providing for the effective conservation of the marine living resources of the Antarctic ecosystem, which is the primary goal of CCALMR. As established by the CCAMLR Working Group on the Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP), research can fall into one of three categories: baseline monitoring, directed research (to evaluate potential monitoring parameters), and related research (activities not related directly to monitoring, but producing results complementary to monitoring). CEMP also identified a series of land-based and pelagic integrated study areas (ISA's) where seabird monitoring should be carried out. The ISA of interest to the U.S. is located along the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Palmer LTER studies are congruous with these international activities and over the past several years Bill Fraser has given a series of presentations to national agencies seeking planning/management advice. For example, in 1994 he was an invited panelist, U.S. State Department, An Evaluation of the U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources Program, Washington, D.C. and gave a presentation: Results of the Joint U.S. AMLR and LTER Programs at Palmer Station, Antarctica. ********************************* *** LTER BIBLIOGRAPHY LIST *** *** LTER Journal Articles *** CHRISTIAN, J. The protocol concerns the testing of an immunological technique designed to determine if Antarctic krill are eating a specific phytoplankton species (Phaeocystis sp.) or not. Pure cultures of Phaeocystis sp. will be injected into a rabbit. Antibodies to Phaeocystis sp. will be purified from the blood of the rabbit. All care and handling of the rabbit will be contracted to the Animal Vivarium.
