TITLE: Long-Term ecological research: Antarctic Marine Ecosystem, a sea ice dominated system AUTHOR: Raymond C. Smith DATE: 2-7 March 1997 PLACE: Gordon Research Conference on Sea Ice Ecology, Ventura, CA Poster Presentation ABSTRACT: The Palmer LTER site is one of a network of scientists asking similar scientific question in a wide variety of landscapes and seascapes. The Palmer LTER study documents interannual variability in the development and extent of annual pack ice and life-history parameters of primary producers and populations of key species from different trophic levels in the Antarctic marine food web. Results from four Summer cruises illustrate the strong interannual variability in sea ice extent, hydrography and pigment biomass.
