TITLE: Accelerated Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Databases for GIS applications in limnology and oceanography AUTHOR: Karen Baker, Jordan Hastings, Scott Mensing, Tim Minor MEETING: American Society of Limnology & Oceanography (ASLO) 1995 PRE Meeting, 10th and 11th June 1995, p.9 PLACE: University of Nevada, Reno DATE: 11-15 June 1995 ABSTRACT: June 10th - Survey materials which are presented regularly in Univ. Nevada at Reno (UNR) Geography's introductory GIS course. This course, which focuses on the ARC/INFO software, provides first-semester graduate students in various disciplines with the basic skills to apply GIS in their subsequent studies. In the compressed one-day format, ARC/INFO and its submodules ARC/EDIT and ARC/PLOT will be demonstrated, utilizing pre-built datasets. Also ARC/View2 will be introduced, allowing attendees to perform various displays and analyses independently. June 11th - Discussion on how datasets should be designed and prepared for use with GIS, based on ARC/INFO's geo-relational model. The general topic of relational database management systems (RDBMS) will be surveyed. Non-relational datasets such as grids, lattices, and tins(triangular irregular networks) will be discussed. In many instances, "legacy" datasets in more prosaic formats must be accommodated as well. The ARC/View2 software will again be utilized for its ability to integrate the different data types. Examples will be drawn primarily from the McMurdo Dry Valleys (lacustrine) and Palmer Peninsula (marine) Long Term Ecological Research sites in Antarctica.
