TITLE: Palmer LTER: Photoacclimation in a coastal phytoplankton bloom. AUTHORS: Schofield O, M MOLINE, and PREZELIN, B. DATE: 1995 JOURNAL: Antarctic Journal of the United States, (accepted). Palmer LTER Contribution No. 59 ABSTRACT: Light availability is a critical factor regulating growth and photosynthesis in Antarctic phytoplankton. Here we present the dynamics in the optical parameters which characterize photoacclimation in phytoplankton during a diatom bloom. Chl-specific absorption was not correlated with the bloom; however the quantum yield increased to near theoretical maximum values prior to the bloom. The changes in the quantum yield occurred as the upper mixed layer depth shallowed, suggesting photoacclimation in Antarctic phytoplankton may be constrained by water column mixing.
